From Classrooms to Characters: My Journey Into Voice Acting

From Classrooms to Characters: My Journey Into Voice Acting

The Beginning

Some journeys don't begin with a grand plan. I could say it all started one night at my favourite karaoke bar (of all places!). I was to meet the man that will change my life.

But I'm getting ahead of myself so, first, a little backstory.

Before I ever stepped behind a microphone, I was an English teacher. I studied English at university, where I quickly found myself drawn to phonetics, the music of speech and the subtle differences that people sometimes don't notice. While others treated pronunciation as a requirement, I treated it as an art form.

Even as a child, I was obsessed with getting intonation just right. I would repeat sentences, mimic rhythms, and fine-tune sounds. It didn't matter if no one noticed. I noticed, and that was enough.

From Teaching to Storytelling

After teaching, I moved on to marketing, working as a manager and content writer. On paper, it made sense. The storytelling element was there, and I was young and eager to progress up the rungs. I enjoyed it immensely, but I found myself drawn more and more toward the world of gaming: the atmosphere, the immersion, and above all, the music.

Epic game soundtracks blew me away. Skyrim, Witcher, Dragon Age, you name it. They could tell stories without words, yet still demanded a voice to match their scale. I didn't just want to listen. I wanted to be part of that world.

The Fateful Night

Then came the fateful night at the karaoke bar. I met the person who would become my voice acting mentor. I had been following his work but hadn't really thought about seeking him out and meeting him. But meet we did, and my opportunity was finally there.

Soon after that I started classes, and for the first time, everything I had been building began to align. My background in language, my obsession with pronunciation, my ear for intonation, and my love of storytelling all had a place now.

Making It Real

Then came the moment that made it real.

I booked my first job in gaming.

That experience changed everything. It was no longer a distant dream or a creative curiosity. It became tangible proof that I could actually pull this off. I could step into a character, deliver, and belong in the space I had admired for so long.

At the same time, my life outside of work was changing, too. Becoming a new mum reshaped my priorities in a way nothing else had. I needed a lifestyle that allowed for flexibility, creativity, and presence. Voice acting offered exactly that.

It was a dream come true, but it was also practical. It gave me the chance to build something of my own while still being there for my family.

Building the Foundation

Support made all the difference in making that transition possible. My husband believed in this path from the very beginning. He went as far as building my vocal booth himself, turning a corner of our home into a space where this new chapter could fully come to life. That space became more than a booth. It became a starting point.

Looking Back

Looking back, nothing about this journey feels accidental or random. The child who cared too much about how sentences sounded became the adult who could shape them with intention. The teacher became the performer. The writer found her voice in a completely new way.

This is still just the beginning, but it is a beginning built on years of quiet preparation, unexpected encounters, and the courage to say yes when the moment arrived.
